A passenger paid extra for an emergency exit row on a five-hour flight. Then an older woman asked if she could use one of the two empty seats beside him.
He said yes.
A few seconds later, she was stretched across both seats with her head resting on his armrest, almost in his lap.
That was not quite what he had agreed to.
An Empty Exit Row
The passenger had paid extra for a window seat in the emergency exit row. With a busy weekend ahead, he wanted the extra legroom and a slightly more comfortable flight.
Boarding ended with an unexpected bonus: both the middle seat and aisle seat next to him were empty.
He stayed in the window seat he had paid for and placed his sweater and headphone case on the empty middle seat.
For about an hour, he had the whole row to himself.
Then She Asked If the Seats Were Taken
An older woman eventually approached the row and asked whether the two empty seats were taken.
They were not, so she asked if she could sit there.
He had no problem with it and told her she could.
Taking the aisle seat would have been the obvious move. She would have gained extra legroom, and he would still have had some personal space.
Instead, she pushed his sweater and headphone case off the middle seat toward him.
Then she started lying down.
She stretched across both empty seats and put her head on his armrest.
Her head and hair were now close enough to be almost in his lap.
For around 30 seconds, he simply sat there trying to understand how an offer to use an empty seat had turned into this.
She Was Apparently Too Tired to Sit
He tapped her and explained that he was using the armrest.
Instead of moving, the woman began explaining that she was tired, sore and needed to lie down.
Then she put her head right back on the armrest.
He did not keep arguing with her. He got up and found a flight attendant.
The Flight Attendant Brought a Card Machine
The passenger explained that the woman was using seats she had not paid for.
The flight attendant returned with a payment terminal.
The solution was simple.
If she wanted to stay in the upgraded row, she could pay for the seat.
The woman once again explained that she was tired and sore.
The flight attendant did not get pulled into a debate. If she had a credit card, she could pay for the seat.
Suddenly, lying down was no longer essential.
She got up and went back to her original seat.
She Could Have Just Taken the Aisle Seat
That is what makes the whole airplane seat dispute especially strange.
The passenger had already allowed her to move into the empty exit row. She could have taken the aisle seat, enjoyed the extra space and continued the flight without any problem.
Instead, she moved his belongings, occupied two seats and used his armrest as a pillow.
The moment staying there came with a price tag, she decided her original seat was good enough after all.
What would you have done?
Would you have let her stay in the row after that, or called a flight attendant immediately?
