Free food is usually one of the better mistakes a restaurant can make. You didn't order it, you didn't pay for it, and now there are extra fries on the table.
For one mother out to dinner with her child, though, even free truffle fries managed to turn into a complaint.
The Fries Weren't Even Their Order
A waitress arrived at the table carrying an order of truffle fries that neither of them had asked for.
The mother pointed out the mistake, but the waitress didn't make a big deal out of it. She simply told them they could keep the fries.
Honestly, not a bad outcome.
Before anyone started eating them, however, the mother had one more concern. She made her child check the receipt to make absolutely sure the mystery fries hadn't secretly made their way onto the bill.
They hadn't.
So now the situation was pretty straightforward: the restaurant had accidentally delivered some fries, the waitress said they could keep them, and they were completely free.
That should have been the end of it.
Apparently, Free Fries Still Need to Be Perfect
The mother tried one.
And then, instead of just deciding the free fries weren't very good and leaving them alone, she flagged the waitress down again.
This time she had a complaint.
The fries were cold, she said, and they didn't taste enough like truffle.
Yes, these were still the same fries she hadn't ordered.
The same fries she had already confirmed she hadn't paid for.
Apparently, free wasn't quite good enough.
And Somehow She Got a Gift Card
You might expect the waitress to apologize and take the unwanted fries away.
Instead, she came back with a $10 gift card.
So the final result was impressive in its own strange way: the mother received food she never ordered, paid nothing for it, complained about its quality, and somehow walked away with ten dollars in restaurant credit.
Meanwhile, her child had been sitting there for the entire performance.
By that point, there was only one thought left: maybe this was a good time to tell the waitress they were adopted.
