Hate Crime Investigation Launched Following Disturbance on Newmarket Main Street

A Toronto man was arrested after causing a disturbance on Main Street in Newmarket early Sunday morning. The incident, captured on video by bystanders, has led to a hate crime investigation by York Regional Police.

A video on Facebook shows a man, later identified as Andrew Mitanoff, 43, standing in the middle of Main Street, aggressively confronting bystanders and slamming on the hoods of approaching vehicles. The incident escalated when he jumped through the open front window of Hungry Brew Hops at 211 Main and attempted to fight with the bar's patrons while yelling homophobic slurs.

Officers apprehended Mitanoff as he continued to repeat homophobic slurs. York Regional Police confirmed that they responded to the report on June 25 at 12:40 a.m. Mitanoff was charged with mischief under $5,000 and for being intoxicated in a public place. The windshield of a vehicle was also found to be cracked and damaged.

“Due to the utterances made, the case is being reviewed by a hate crime investigator,” said Sgt. Clint Whitney of York Regional Police.

The incident has been shared widely on social media, sparking concern and outrage within the community. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to be released as they become available.
