A Toronto man was arrested after causing a disturbance on Main Street South in Newmarket early on June 25, 2023. The incident was recorded by bystanders, and York Regional Police said the man's remarks prompted a review by a hate-crime investigator.

Video footage shows a man, later identified by police as 43-year-old Andrew Mitanoff, standing in the street, confronting bystanders and striking the hoods of approaching vehicles. He then entered Hungry Brew Hops through an open front window and confronted patrons while repeatedly using homophobic slurs.

Officers apprehended Mitanoff while he continued to repeat homophobic slurs. Police said they responded to the disturbance at approximately 12:40 a.m. A vehicle at the scene was also found with a cracked and damaged windshield.

Mitanoff was charged with mischief under $5,000 and being intoxicated in a public place. The charges described in the original report were allegations and had not been proven in court at that time.

"Due to the utterances made, the case is being reviewed by a hate crime investigator," York Regional Police Sgt. Clint Whitney said.

No later publicly reported outcome was identified, so the current status of the charges and the police review is unclear.
